How selective catalytic reduction (SCR) works
SCR technology is based on a chemical reaction in which ammonia (NH₃) or a derived reducing agent is injected into the exhaust gases. On passing through the catalytic converter, the NOₓ is converted into nitrogen (N₂) and water (H₂O), two elements naturally present in the atmosphere. Two main mechanisms are used, depending on the composition of the gases:
– Standard SCR reaction: 4 NH₃ + 4 NO + O₂ → 4 N₂ + 6 H₂O
– Fast-SCR reaction: 4 NH₃ + 2 NO + 2 NO₂ → 4 N₂ + 6 H₂O
The efficiency of this technology depends on gas temperature, flow rate, catalyst configuration and mixture quality. Acoustic and thermal sizing of the assembly is therefore essential to guarantee optimum system responsiveness.
