Reducing pollutant emissions: how SCR technology transforms exhaust gases into cleaner air

A critical environmental issue for industry

Against a backdrop of energy transition and tighter environmental regulations, industries using combustion engines must reduce their pollutant emissions, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOₓ). These gases, produced by combustion, contribute to the formation of smog, acid rain and worsen urban and industrial air pollution. To preserve air quality and meet compliance requirements (Euro VI, IMO Tier III, etc.), controlling NOₓ has become a priority. Faced with this challenge, industrial acoustic solutions must today incorporate a global approach, including pollution control.

The SCR solution integrated into industrial silencers

The BOËT Group has developed an innovative approach that combines noise reduction and exhaust gas pollution control. Thanks to the integration of an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system within its engine silencers, it is now possible to effectively treat nitrogen oxides at the same time as noise. This integration transforms polluting emissions into harmless components, such as nitrogen and water vapor, while guaranteeing the system’s aeraulic and acoustic performance. It’s a tailor-made solution, perfectly adapted to the constraints of compactness, energy efficiency and environmental compliance.

How selective catalytic reduction (SCR) works

SCR technology is based on a chemical reaction in which ammonia (NH₃) or a derived reducing agent is injected into the exhaust gases. On passing through the catalytic converter, the NOₓ is converted into nitrogen (N₂) and water (H₂O), two elements naturally present in the atmosphere. Two main mechanisms are used, depending on the composition of the gases:
– Standard SCR reaction: 4 NH₃ + 4 NO + O₂ → 4 N₂ + 6 H₂O
– Fast-SCR reaction: 4 NH₃ + 2 NO + 2 NO₂ → 4 N₂ + 6 H₂O
The efficiency of this technology depends on gas temperature, flow rate, catalyst configuration and mixture quality. Acoustic and thermal sizing of the assembly is therefore essential to guarantee optimum system responsiveness. This is why the BOËT Group combines its expertise in industrial acoustics, fluid dynamics and materials engineering to design SCR silencers perfectly adapted to each application.

One of the key benefits of integrated SCR technology is its ability to reduce NOₓ emissions by up to 95%. This performance enables industrial plants to comply with the most demanding standards, while maintaining high acoustic and energy performance. The BOËT Group’s approach also aims to limit pressure losses and optimize the equipment’s footprint and weight, making it easier to integrate into complex industrial environments such as ICPE-classified sites, offshore installations, or power generation plants. Thanks to advanced numerical simulations (CFD and FEM), each system is precisely dimensioned to meet the customer’s technical constraints.
