Lyon Sud Hospital: customized Audiology booths and acoustic performance

The challenge of silence in the hospital environment

Certain areas of a hospital require an absolute level of silence to guarantee the quality of medical examinations. This is the case for Audiology booths, where background noise must be extremely low to ensure the accuracy of hearing tests. The Lyon Sud Hospital, part of the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL), called on Groupe BOËT to design and install custom-made acoustic booths meeting particularly stringent technical requirements.

This project is in line with Groupe BOËT’s mission to develop high-performance industrial and hospital acoustic solutions, combining measurement quality, comfort and acoustic safety.

Project background

The main objective was to guarantee an extremely low level of background noise inside the booths, above the regulatory thresholds defined for audiometric examinations. This acoustic control is essential to ensure the reliability of the tests, as well as the comfort of patients and healthcare professionals.

The project was carried out in the heart of an active hospital department, in restricted spaces and subject to stringent access, hygiene and safety constraints. These conditions called for a modular, compact and demountable solution, without compromising acoustic performance.

Technical and environmental constraints

Sensitive environment and integration constraints

The work was carried out in a demanding hospital environment: busy treatment areas, confined spaces, continuous circulation of medical staff. The constraints involved both thearchitectural integration of the cabins and the preservation of the service’s operating conditions.

Acoustic and structural requirements

The cabins had to achieve sound attenuation values in excess of 50 dB(A), while ensuring silent ventilation in compliance with hospital standards. Acoustic dimensioning was carried out by Groupe Boët’s in-house design office, including insulation, absorption and reverberation calculations.

Groupe BOËT acoustic solution

To meet these requirements, Groupe BOËT designed, manufactured and installed four custom-built, modular Audiology booths with high acoustic performance. Their design is based on a combination of multi-layer acoustic panels, certified acoustic doors and high-density absorbent materials.

Modular, adaptable design

Each cabin was designed as a self-contained unit, easily integrated into existing hospital spaces. The self-supporting structure and installation without heavy anchoring meant that installation was quick and clean, with no interruption to medical activities.

Certified acoustic performance

The cabins feature Acoustic doors with reinforced perimeter sealing and a silent ventilation system designed to maintain optimum airflow without disturbing measurements. Joints and interfaces have been tested in accordance with Groupe BOËT’s internal protocols, guaranteeing acoustic insulation that meets and exceeds regulatory requirements.

Performance and benefits

Acoustic measurements carried out after installation confirmed that the target performance had been achieved. Background noise levels measured inside the cabins were below 25 dB(A), exceeding current regulatory standards.

  • Significant improvement in the accuracy of audiometric tests,
  • Reduced noise stress for patients and practitioners,
  • Guaranteed reliability for medical diagnosis and follow-up.

Impact on audiometric test quality

By controlling background noise, Audiology booths ensure faithful reproduction of the sound signals required for examinations. Reduced external interference ensures accurate, consistent and comparable results over time.

Practitioners benefit from a stable, ergonomic environment, while patients enjoy a calm, reassuring space. This performance confirms the relevance of the Groupe BOËT’s tailor-made approach, combining technical rigor with respect for hospital constraints.

In conclusion

This project for theLyon Sud Hospital (HCL ) illustrates Groupe BOËT ‘s ability to design high-performance acoustic solutions for sensitive environments. The combination of advanced acoustic engineering, custom manufacturing and controlled integration enabled us to exceed regulatory requirements while optimizing sound comfort.
