Compressor noise reduction: customized acoustic enclosures and guaranteed performance

Industry

Project background

The site concerned was located in an area of high acoustic sensitivity, subject to strict regulatory requirements for industrial noise abatement. Initial acoustic measurements revealed noise levels in excess of permissible thresholds, exposing the site to the risk of non-compliance.

The main aim of the project was twofold:

  • Reduce the noise level emitted by the compressor to ensure compliance with the property limit,
  • Maintain easy, secure access to equipment for maintenance and inspection operations.

This mission was part of Groupe BOËT ‘s approach to offering high-performance, sustainable industrial acoustic solutions, tailored to the specific needs of each site.

Technical and environmental constraints

A site sensitive to noise pollution

The compressor was installed in the immediate vicinity of a residential area. The impulse noise generated by its operation was causing a noticeable nuisance for the neighbourhood. The challenge was to reduce the sound pressure level without disturbing the equipment’s mechanical and thermal operating conditions.

Continuous maintenance and operation

As the site is in constant operation, the acoustic solution had to allow uninterrupted maintenance. The enclosure therefore had to incorporate removable zones for easy access to critical components (motor, filters, compressor, fans).

Air flow and temperature management

A compressor’s performance depends directly on its ventilation. The acoustic enclosure therefore had to incorporate an acoustic ventilation system sized to dissipate heat without creating back pressure or resonance. This dual constraint – thermal and acoustic – guided the entire design process.

The Groupe BOËT acoustic solution

Groupe Boët has designed and manufactured a high-performance custom acoustic enclosure, specifically adapted to the equipment and its environment.

Custom design and modularity

The acoustic cladding consists of multi-layer metal acoustic panels combining an inner perforated sheet, a high-density mineral wool filling and a galvanized outer sheet. This system offers an overall sound reduction of over 30 dB(A).

Roof and facade components have been designed to be fully removable, guaranteeing fast, safe access to the entire compressor for maintenance and technical inspections.

Integrated acoustic ventilation

An acoustic ventilation system was integrated into the hood structure. Air flows were calculated using CFD aeraulic modelling to ensure the necessary air renewal without generating additional noise. Ventilation silencers were installed on air inlets and outlets to maintain acoustic performance.

Performance, safety and durability

The choice of materials (galvanized steel, stainless steel fasteners, powder-coated paint) guarantees resistance to external conditions and long-term durability. The enclosure complies with safety and maintenance standards, while maintaining the required acoustic and thermal performance.

Acoustic performance and results

Acoustic acceptance measurements taken after installation confirmed the effectiveness of the system:

  • Average reduction in noise levels of 10 to 15 dB(A) around the site;
  • Compliance with regulatory thresholds at the property boundary;
  • Stability of compressor operating temperatures ;
  • Total accessibility for maintenance operations.

This performance demonstrates the Groupe BOËT ‘s ability to combine noise abatement and operational safety in a context of high environmental sensitivity.

Impact on site compliance and operations

Thanks to this tailor-made acoustic enclosure, the site was able to regain full regulatory compliance while ensuring continuity of operations. Noise levels at the property boundary now comply with legal requirements, eliminating any risk of complaints or administrative sanctions.

This project illustrates Groupe BOËT’s versatility in designing industrial noise reduction solutions to meet the specific needs of sensitive sectors such as energy, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, data centers and wastewater treatment plants.

In conclusion

The success of this project demonstrates Groupe BOËT ‘s ability to combine acoustic performance, custom engineering and technical integration. The acoustic enclosure designed for this compressor offers measurable noise reduction, operating comfort and simplified maintenance, all in compliance with regulatory and environmental constraints.
