Industrial silencers for gas turbine GT9E : Groupe Boët for EP Produzione
In the power generation sector, gas turbines generate noise levels and operating conditions – temperature, pressure, flow rate – that demand rigorously designed acoustic equipment. Any failure in sizing compromises both the plant’s regulatory compliance and its operational continuity. Groupe Boët met this requirement for EP Produzione, supplying two high-performance industrial silencers for the Trapani power plant in Sicily.
Trapani power plant: silencers for severe conditions
EP Produzione operates a power plant in Trapani, Italy. As part of aplant construction project, the operator expressed the need for two acoustic silencers for the GT9E turbine, in a circuit carrying hot air at high temperature. The request was forwarded to Groupe Boët via EthosEnergy and Amarù Giovanni SRL, the local coordinator based in Gela.
The operating conditions imposed were particularly severe: maximum inlet temperature of 271°C, outlet pressure open to atmosphere, and flanged connection requirements in line with international ASME standards. This type of project requires complete mastery of aero-acoustic dimensioning and rigorously controlled manufacturing.
GT9E turbine noise control: technical challenges
Noise abatement on a gas turbine in service poses specific technical constraints. Silencers must provide effective sound attenuation while withstanding high temperatures, without generating pressure drops that penalize the circuit. Flanged connections must comply with strict dimensional tolerances to guarantee the sealing and mechanical strength of the assembly.
In this context, Groupe Boët made a precise technical adaptation to the initial reference plan. The body material was modified – S235JR steel instead of the 16MO3 originally planned – after customer approval. The assembly flange was redefined in Slip-On 8″ 150lb, compliant with ASME B16.5, material A105, with tight control of dimensional tolerances to remain within the envelope accepted by the operator.
Solution: custom-designed SLX DN200 silencers
Groupe Boët has designed and manufactured two SLX DN200 industrial silencers, adapted to the GT9E turbine design. Each unit has a total length of 1,437 mm, a unit weight of 165.7 kg, and surface protection by high-temperature black paint (1×50 µm), adapted to the thermal conditions of the installation.
The choice of the SLX type – silencer with absorbing elements – meets the need to combine effective noise reduction at the frequencies characteristic of gas turbines, while maintaining low aeraulic resistance. The design incorporates a BSPP G1/2″ drain with plug, enabling purging and maintenance during operation. Both units comply with Boët StopSon reference drawing no. 3-26022276-5409-001, revision B.
Specifications and certified manufacturing
The acoustic equipment was manufactured in Groupe Boët’s workshops in Tourcoing, within the framework of an ISO 9001 and ISO 19443 certified management system. The silencers comply with the main applicable construction codes and standards: ASME B16.5 for flanged assemblies, as well as RCC-M, CODAP and CODETI according to project requirements.
The contractually agreed manufacturing lead time is eleven weeks from receipt of order, with delivery EXW from Tourcoing. The warranty covers material and manufacturing defects for twelve months after commissioning, with a maximum of eighteen months after delivery. This level of commitment reflects the industrial rigor applied by Groupe Boët to all its acoustic silencers for the energy industry.
Internationally recognized expertise in industrial silencers
This project for EP Produzione illustrates Groupe Boët’s ability to work on power generation applications with high technical constraints, adapting its industrial acoustic solutions to the precise specifications of each installation. From the sizing phase to certified manufacturing, each stage is carried out with the same rigorous engineering standards.
