The acoustic challenges of XXL data centers
In a data center like Digital Realty‘s 40,000 sq. m. facility just outside Paris,
thousands of servers generate continuous noise, amplified by cooling systems and
generators.
Problems encountered include
- Engine noise reduction and backup systems ;
- Acoustic protection of adjacent sensitive areas;
- Reduction of environmental noise to comply with ICPE industrial site requirements;
- Industrial building acoustics to control indoor noise levels for employees;
- Industrial process acoustics to secure critical equipment.
Data centers thus combine energy and structural constraints (vibration studies),
mechanical fatigue, seismic studies equipment) and acoustics which
require high-level engineering and precise acoustic simulation.
Industrial silencers: a key role in noise reduction
Among the most strategic acoustic equipment in this type of infrastructure,
acoustic silencers play a central role in limiting noise from engines,
compressors and emergency systems.
Depending on the configuration, they take the form of :
- Engine mufflers for generator sets ;
- Compressor silencer;
- Blower silencer;
- Silencer for pneumatic conveying and other noisy industrial machines.
